I am getting ready for my daughter's birthday party. I have been doing a lot of work to get prepared for the party. Making all sorts of things for the party and as part of her present too. So before I showed pictures of what I made I decided to post pictures of past parties.
So my son is into cars now. Like Need for Speed kinda cars.......fast sporty type cars. His favorite is a Mustang so to go along with his Hot Wheel party I decided to try to tackle the job of making a Mustang shaped cake. It took about 5 hours total between baking, carving and decorating. But I think it turned out pretty good for my first ever 3-D cake.
I copied a picture of a mustang from the internet and made it as big as I could. Then after I printed it out I cut it out and used it almost like a stencil. I just put it up against my cake and carved out the shape. I used pound cake because it is more dense and so it is easier to carve with. I had to use two cakes one on top the other so it would be high enough. Once I got the shape I wanted then I covered it with frosting. I used Wilton's Whipped Icing Mix. (Very easy to make all you do is add ice water and beat until it gets thick. Then I put it in the fridge for a little while to make it even thicker and easier to decorate with.) I also like it because it isn't very sweet. For the black outline and tires I just added black Wilton's icing coloring to the icing and used a paintbrush to 'paint' it on. For the windows I used sugar paper which cuts just like paper and it stuck right to the icing. Then I just used a little bit of blue food coloring and water to make the tint on the windows and just brushed it on. Same thing for the lights.
And I also made cupcakes for that extra something. I used Oreos and just put lines with the frosting to make it look like tires or rims. I should have done that on the car itself but I didn't even think about it.
I think it all came out really well and everyone loved it. The only thing I would do differently is put a little bit more icing on the cake. The cake was so thick that it really needed a thicker layer of icing. But it was really fun! :)
